How to make cannabutter: Recipes + tips

Vernon FlemingFebruary 9, 2020

Cannabutter is the product of butter infused with decarboxylated cannabis flower. When making cannabutter, the first thing you want to do is get your hands on some decarboxylated flower.

What the heck is decarboxylation?

Decarboxylation, or “decarbing" uses heat to turn the non-psychoactive cannabinoid tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA) into the THC that gives consumers that “high" feeling. Like a flame to a joint, it's also an essential step to remember when making cannabutter.

Effective decarbing can be achieved at home by spreading the flower on a clean parchment paper or foil-lined baking and cooking it in the oven for 45 minutes at 220°F. If you go about the baking process, make sure you check on your flower every 10 minutes or so to prevent it from burning. If you see or smell smoke, you've unfortunately overcooked your bud.

There are several products on the market that can help with decarbing discreetly at home, such as Ardent's NOVA or LEVO. There are also appliances such as the Magical Butter machine, which completes the entire infusion process in a hands-off and automated fashion.

And, since THC is fat-soluble, you can actually infuse other oils and fats, such as olive oil, avocado oil, margarine, and coconut oil, to incorporate more of that euphoric feeling--or relief from medical symptoms--into your everyday meals.

How to make cannabutter

There are a few ways to make cannabutter, and every home (or professional!) cannachef has their preferred method. To get started on your first foray into cannabutter, you'll need just a few items:

  • Small-to-medium-sized crockpot
  • Half-ounce of dry, decarbed flower
  • Half-pound of butter
  • Cheesecloth
  • Bowl for straining and cooling

Step 1: Turn the crockpot to low setting and allow your butter to melt.
Step 2: Add your decarbed flower to the butter, placing a lid on top to cover. Set a timer for 6 hours and make sure to stir every half hour or so.
Step 3: Secure a large piece of cheesecloth to the top of a bowl and pour the warm oil and herb mixture on top, being careful to make sure all of the oil sifts through the cheesecloth while the plant material stays separate in the cheesecloth. Use a spatula or large spoon to help sift the oil through the cloth, making sure the plant material doesn't get through.
Step 4: Dispose of cheesecloth and let the oil set in the fridge for about 8 hours.
Step 5: Enjoy your favorite recipes!

Cannabutter pro tips and ideas

Levo Easy To Make:
While the crockpot method is easy to do, I personally enjoy using my Levo machine to make cannabutter. The Levo is designed not just for butter but other botanical oils like almond, olive, and grapeseed, and you don't need to decarb your flower in advance. With the Levo the process is simple: All you have to do is add your oil or butter to the machine, place your flower in the dispenser and set your timer. Levo even comes with a handy calculator to get the right timing for whatever oil or butter you desire.
