Top 5 strains for boosting creativity

Gregg PadulaSeptember 14, 2020

Cannabis can unlock an infinite world of creative thought, far outside your usual thoughts. It can open your mind to creative expression beyond what you believed possible.

There’s no definitive connection between creativity and cannabis biologically – however it spans throughout all art forms, making cannabis a universal catalyst for alternate perspective and innovative thinking. For example, a musician may experience the effects of cannabis on their creativity differently than a photographer, or a writer. A friend to all forms of art and abstract thinking, cannabis has unlocked the door to an endless number of beloved works of art.

In order to choose the perfect cannabis strain to stir your creative juices, it’s important to pair the strain’s effects with your intended creative outlet. For example, some writers or painters may prefer a strain with some indica traits to aid them in relaxing so they sit down and focus - while a musician may find any percentage of indica lethargic and counterproductive to their art.

Here are our top five cannabis strains for firing up the wheels of creativity, painstakingly assembled, in no particular order:

Blue Dream

The offspring of Blueberry and Haze, Blue Dream has remained a “go-to” for creative cannabis consumers. Its popularity stems from its unique ability to provide sharp focus without the over-stimulation of heavier sativa strains like Sour Diesel. This makes Blue Dream a great choice for those who are a bit tightly wound and have a general difficulty with paying attention for extended periods of time.

Blue Dream’s mild stimulating effects seamlessly lean toward its Blueberry lineage a couple hours in, allowing you to step back and see your work from a new perspective.

High levels of the myrcene terpene are responsible for the strain’s tranquil effects, and its secondary terpenes linalool and limonene may actually lift your mood, the most common wall for creativity.

Trainwreck is a very potent sativa - and the flagship strain of Humboldt County. Of course, such a coveted title in that arena means you probably have something special.

Over many generations, the pioneer cultivators occupying massive plots of land deep behind the redwood curtain of Northern California bred Mexican and Thai sativas with Afghani indicas to produce a variety which boosts the velocity and volume of creative thought like a bullet train.

Trainwreck’s most abundant terpene is Humulene, and second caryophyllene. This provides the user with an immediate euphoric energy that begins speedy, but then branches out into intense creativity and happiness.

A legendary East coast strain with one of the greatest origin stories in cannabis history, ChemDawg has helped breed strains like Headband, Deadhead OG, and more recently, NF1.

Believed to be a blend of Nepalese and Thai sativas, ChemDawg offers a different creative lift than the others on this list. Closer to a 50/50 sativa/indica hybrid, it’s very useful for warding off the worries and concerns which halt the travel of inventive thoughts.

ChemDawg isn’t a “get up and go” strain, though it’s by no means a couch-lock strain either. Because of its indica presence, ChemDawg may not inspire creative action, but it will conjure up some wildly abstract and often silly thoughts to jot down, so keep a pen and paper close by.

The strain is heavy in caryophyllene and myrcene terpenes, adding further relief to stress and worry.

OG Kush

A slightly-sativa leaning hybrid, OG Kush provides heightened creativity without the intensity of traditional sativa strains. Possibly the most universal strain on earth, OG Kush is ideal for relaxation any time of day without the lethargic crash. The strain’s lineage is a bit murky, but most cannabis experts are certain it’s a phenotype of ChemDawg.

OG Kush contains significant amounts of caryophyllene, limonene, and myrcene. These terpenes are believed to promote tranquility within the body and mind – possibly lifting the obstacles blocking your creativity.

Super Lemon Haze

The most potent sativa on this list, Super Lemon Haze has a reputation as one of the most productive strains has stretched over decades. The Haze family is known for its dominant sativa traits which mirror the mind-racing, physically uplifting effects of strains like Sour Diesel and Durban Poison.

The offspring of Lemon Haze and Super Silver Haze, this is a sativa lover’s dream. The instant effects send you off like a creative rocket with more than enough energy to both conjure an idea and bring it to fruition. Those sensitive to the effects of sativa-heavy strains may want to avoid Super Lemon Haze, as it could be counteractive in opening up the doors of creativity and artistic expression.

Terpinolene is dominant in Super Lemon Haze, displaying a terpene profile separate from other Haze varieties. Combined with a high THC percentage, Terpinolene is described as a vehicle for happiness and creativity.

While sativa strains are linked almost exclusively to creativity due to their energy boosting properties, this is not the case at all. Our biology dictates how we react to specific strains. One size does not fit all, but these five are great places to begin your creative journey.
